Why bother?

Updated: Jan 9

What’s the point?

It’s a question every triathlete asks themselves at some stage.

Even those of us at Brownlee Fitness.

We wonder -

“What’s the point…

… of having a coach?”

On the face of it, having a coach just seems like an expense.

I mean, what’s so difficult about getting a bit faster in the pool, on the bike and on the road, right?

And surely if you want help you can just Google a training plan?

Well, yes and no.

There are lots of triathletes who have just picked a random plan from the Internet, followed it through and got better.

And more power to them.

But coaching isn’t just about being given a training plan.

It’s about so much more than that.

For example, a good coach can tailor everything specifically to you.

We all pick up small niggles and injuries, sometimes feel extremely fatigued, or need to tweak our plans to suit our schedules.

Doing that on your own is hard.

But an experienced set of eyes can take the weight of the world off your shoulders, and help you plan around all that and more.

Similarly, if you pick the right coach, they’ll have so much experience from years of coaching all different kinds of athletes.

And when you hit a plateau, or get stuck in a rut with your training, they’ll know exactly how you can kickstart your progress again, ASAP.

Finally -- and this is a big one -- it’s so much easier to have an OBjective view than a SUBjective one.

Rarely will a coach be there, barking at you to work harder.

Instead, they’re more likely to tell you to rein it back in.

Why?

Well, typically, us triathletes have a “GO GO GO” mentality.

That’s good for racing.

But it often means we push ourselves too hard in training, and don’t give our bodies a break.

An expert coach knows when to spot this is happening.

And they give you ‘permission’ to just ease off the gas a little, and be kinder to your body.

All that (and more) is why coaching is so beneficial.

And it’s why even the coaches at Brownlee Fitness have their own coaches.

I’m not saying you have to have a coach to succeed.

But if the hundreds of happy, successful athletes we’ve worked with are anything to go by, then I can safely say that any triathlete, at any level can benefit from great coaching.

And you won’t find better, more experienced coaches than the ones at Brownlee Fitness.

So if you’d like to take us for a test-drive…
