If you struggle to get motivated for winter training, we’re here to help.
Let’s face it - Very few of us look forward to the wind, rain and cold as much as we do to cycling down country roads in glorious sunshine, or pounding the pavements in 30-degree heat.
But if you want to excel in your races, you can’t skip your winter training.
The question is though - How do you stay motivated in winter?
Well, here are some top tips from Al and Jonny:
❄️ Assess Last Season
Look back—where did you end up last season?
Did you feel strong, or did you scrape through?
Winter's your chance to fix what went wrong, be honest with yourself, and set the bar higher.
If last season didn’t go as plan, don’t beat yourself up. But do use it as motivation to push forward.
❄️ Know Your Weakest Discipline
This is your season to work on what holds you back.
Whether it's improving your hill-climbing, dialling in nutrition, or mastering pacing.
Winter is the time to shore up your weaknesses and turn them into strengths.
It gives you time to focus on your weakest link without the pressure of race day looming.
Get that swim technique sorted or smash those bike intervals.
Alternatively, get in the gym, and dedicate your winter season to building a stronger, more robust physique with the weights.
❄️ Prevent Panic Training
Don’t be one of those who scrambles two months before the season starts. Consistent winter training means no mad rush, no stress, and no injuries from overdoing it, and then you can almost relax into your first race of the season.
It’s all about building fitness slowly.
❄️ Variety is Your Friend
Use winter to mix things up—try a bit of trail running, cyclocross, or even some mountain biking.
It keeps training fresh and fun, and it's still building fitness. Plus, you get out in the fresh air. Winter training is the time to try new things to keep it fun and interesting.
Maybe even ditch the watch or the HR monitor, and just train on feel for a while.
Above all - Stick with it, keep grafting, and you’ll be thanking yourself when the weather warms up and you're flying in races.
❄️ Focus on Your Weaknesses
Jonny’s tip: Use winter to work on your weaker areas—whether it's your swim, bike, or run. Bit by bit, without race-day pressure.
❄️ Set Off-Season Goals
Alistair says, “You’re only as good as the work you do when no one’s watching.” Set some goals—fitness, technique, or consistency.
